317L Nickel Steel

Description

317L offers properties and chemical makeup similar to type 316, but with a higher alloy content. This is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic chromium nickel steel that offers exceptional resistance to corrosion and sulfurous acids. Ideal for applications where minimal contamination is required, 317L is safe from intergranular corrosion in instances where:

  • Low-temperature stress relieving processes are required
  • Heavy cross-sections can’t be annealed

Design features

  • Molybdenum-bearing austenitic chromium nickel steel possessing a higher alloy content than the similar 316
  • Improved tensile, stress-to-rupture and creep strengths compared to other stainless steels
  • Exceptional corrosion resistance that makes 317L ideal for harsh environments
  • Ideal for long-term use in highly corrosive environments thanks to crevice corrosion and pitting resistance
  • Lower intergranular precipitation of chromium carbides during stress relieving and welding process
  • Low carbon content means reduced chance of corrosion failure from intergranular corrosion

Applications

  • Chemical and petrochemical processing equipment
  • Paper and pulp plants
  • Flue gas desulfurization scrubber systems
  • Textile equipment
